52nd meeting of the DGGV Working Group on Post-Mining

Beak reports about bio-management in the Lusatian lignite mining industry

19th – 21st September 2024, Weißwasser (Germany)

Lignite mining has shaped the Lusatian region for almost 150 years. The law on phasing out coal-fired power generation has marked the end of this era. The 52nd Meeting of the Working Group on Post-Mining will outline the many facets of landscape change in the region with lectures and excursions, and present findings on ecology and biodiversity in mining regions.

Beak Consultants GmbH has been involved in pre- and post-mining bio-management since 1994. With two presentations, we will report on the results and experiences from three decades of ecological monitoring of the Welzow-Süd opencast mine:

  • Friday, 20th September 2024, 11:40 AM CEST: 30 years – 30 species: Animal and plant species in the Welzow-Süd opencast mine (presented by Dr Frank Schmidt)
  • Friday, 20th September 2024, 4:10 PM CEST: 30 years – 30 species: Ecological management in the Welzow-Süd opencast mine (presented by Dr Reinhard Reißmann)
